Ensemble Violini Capricciosi was founded in 2007 by Igor Ruhadze, as an ensemble of soloists playing virtuoso violin music and specialising in historical performance. Each of the pieces in this program is presented with a narrative, allowing the audience to deeper understand the historical and musical context.
The program opens with Pietro Antonio Locatelli, one of the first great violinists of his time, an Italian living in Amsterdam, who practiced virtuosity for virtuosity’s sake. His works largely anticipated the works of Niccolò Paganini and sometimes were more technically demanding than the pieces by Paganini himself!
Further, it turns to the works of Guiseppe Tartini, one of the greatest virtuosos of the 18th century, distinguished by the purity of intonation and dazzling left-hand skills, who also helped establish the modern style of violin bowing. The program features his famous sonata "Devil Trill", also known as "Dream of Tartini", the most mysterious of all pieces ever composed, which became a source of endless legends.
Later the program introduces the violin sonata by Pietro Nardini, Tartini’s most beloved student and one of the most eminent violinists of the 18th century. Mozart emphasized the beauty, purity and uniformity of Nardini's tones during his first Italian travel of 1770-1771.
